The Economist Intelligence Unit expects the regime of the Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad, to remain in power throughout the 2021-25 forecast period.

Political instability will be particularly acute in 2021-22 as Syrians are pushed to the brink by rising unemployment, the ongoing erosion of purchasing power and a widening shortage of goods. The security forces are likely to respond to any protests with force.

Syria's healthcare infrastructure has been decimated; the various authorities in Syria's divided territories will be unable to distribute and administer a vaccine quickly.
