The US economy, the world's largest, is primarily driven by consumer spending, which makes up nearly 70% of real GDP. The US is less reliant on external demand than many major economies such as Germany and Japan, helping to shelter it from external shocks.

Political stability risks have eased under the administration of the president, Joe Biden, after a turbulent transition period in December-January. Yet, deep-seated tensions between Democrats and Republicans will continue to stoke political tensions in 2021-25.

The Biden administration's policy focus in 2021 will be on pushing a large-scale economic stimulus plan through Congress. Democrats' narrow majorities will require compromise, resulting in the passage of a slimmed-down infrastructure bill, most likely by October.
