The automotive industry forms an integral part of the Swedish economy and is among the country's main export sectors. The industry is led by Volvo Cars (now owned by China's Geely), as well as commercial vehicle (CV) makers Volvo Group and Scania.

Car production fell sharply owing to the global financial crisis, the euro zone debt crisis and the 2012 bankruptcy of Saab, formerly one of Sweden's major carmakers. By 2014 car production totalled about 150,000 units, or less than half of the 2007 level.

However, output has increased in recent years, owing largely to the revival of the Volvo brand and its success in China, and higher sales in the domestic market. According to the International Association of Automobile Manu-facturers (OICA), car output rose by 10% in 2017 and reached 226,000 units. Data for CV output are not available.
