Romania is a member of the five-nation east-central European automotive hub, which also includes the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland and Hungary. Annual new-vehicle sales nearly tripled between 2014 and 2019, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA), until the coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak brought the industry to a halt this year.

The government declared a state of emergency on March 16th, and has since extended this to May 15th. A strict lockdown is being enforced, with fines for those breaking quarantine. The government has also announced a fiscal support package for the economy, worth 4% of GDP. This includes income support for furloughed workers, as well as debt moratoria. Nevertheless, The Economist Intelligence Unit forecasts that real GDP will fall by 4% in 2020.

New-vehicle sales plunged by 23.8% year on year in the first quarter of 2020, amid the national lockdown. Passenger car sales, which account for 83% of total sales, fell by 21.9%, to 27,979 units, while commercial vehicle (CV) sales plunged by 33.3%, to 6,920 units. Over the year as a whole, The Economist Intelligence Unit expects new-car sales to decline by 22% and CV sales to fall by 29%.
