Switzerland's retail sector is highly concentrated and heavily regulated, especially in food and household goods, in which the two largest players, Migros and Coop, hold a market share of about 60%. The consumer durables market is more fragmented, with many small and specialist shops.

Retail sales growth has been subdued in recent years, constrained in part by domestic economic uncertainty linked to a more volatile exchange rate. Since 2015 the appreciation of the Swiss franc against the euro has made online retail and crossborder shopping in France and Italy more attractive for consumers, weighing on domestic retail sales volumes. Overall household consumption has expanded modestly, supported primarily by higher spending on services.

Underlying macroeconomic conditions have improved slightly since mid-2017, amid some momentum in the labour market and stronger external demand. Although consumer sentiment weakened in the first half of 2018, The Economist Intelligence Unit's baseline forecast is for a mild strengthening of household consumption over the next few years, as a tighter labour market supports firmer real wage growth and consumer demand. However, given the maturity of the Swiss retail market and limited pent-up demand, overall sales growth will be fairly sluggish. We forecast annual average retail volume growth of 0.6% in 2018-22.
