The Socialist Party of Albania (SPA)-led by the prime minister, Edi Rama-rules without a coalition partner. The political environment has become significantly less stable since the resignations of opposition legislators from parliament in February 2019.

Tensions between the government and the opposition, led by the Democratic Party of Albania (DPA), will slow the pace of reforms. In the meantime Mr Rama and his SPA will try to ride out the political crisis until the next general election, due in June 2021.

In February 2020 the European Commission announced a tougher accession framework. The Economist Intelligence Unit believes that there is a high risk that the process will be delayed until the second half of the 2020-24 forecast period.
