After having weathered the 2008-09 global financial crisis moderately well, Egypt's financial system suffered greatly following a February 2011 revolution that deposed former president Hosni Mubarak. In the first 11 months of the year, interest rates increased, the Egyptian pound depreciated and the country's financial markets performed poorly.

In February 2011 the interim government announced plans to convert the public Banque du Caire into a specialised micro-, small- and medium-sized enterprises (M-SMEs) lending facility. This supports new and existing international lending programmes for M-SMEs.

In November 2011 the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) raised its two headline interest rates, the overnight lending and deposit rates, to 10.25% and 9.25% from 9.75% and 8.25%, respectively. This marked the first rate increase since 2008 and reverses the CBE's previous policy of holding rates steady after the revolution. Ongoing political unrest, rising inflationary pressures and a poor macroeconomic climate are among the reasons the CBE cited for the change.
