The methanol industry Japan is still at a nascent stage and accounted for only about seven percent of the overall production of methanol in Asia-Pacific. Japan imports most of its methanol stock as the quantity produced within the country hardly covers up for its complete needs.

However, moderate demand from the end use packaging sector is expected to continue, and Japan’s share of the region’s methanol demand will shrink further by the year 2021.

The methanol industry is one of the world’s most dynamic and vibrant – producing a basic chemical molecule that touches our daily lives in a myriad of ways. From the basic chemical building block of paints, solvents and plastics, to innovative applications in energy, transportation fuel and fuel cells, methanol is a key commodity and an integral part of our global economy. The two greatest demand drivers for methanol are likely to be for gasoline blending, and methanol-to-olefins (MTO) and methanol-to-propylene (MTP), with the MTO/MTP growth being partially due to attractive cost advantages compared to traditional naphtha-cracking (i.e., crude oil based). Methanol and its chemical derivatives are traditionally used in a variety of industrial and consumer products.
