The Economist Intelligence Unit forecasts that retail sales in Indonesia will rise from US$393.8bn in 2017 to US$618.1bn in 2022. Together with restaurants and hotels, the retail and wholesale sector employs about one-fifth of the labour force, or around 28m people.

Urban areas, which account for 55% of the population, will remain the principal focus of retail activity. The main island of Java (where the capital, Jakarta, is located) will maintain its dominance. Nevertheless, governmental support for developing infrastructure in more remote regions will also prompt an expansion in retail activity in these areas.

Demographic factors-around 27% of the population is under the age of 15-indicate scope for strong medium- to-long-term growth in retail sales. Increasing wealth and the rise of a younger, more connected demographic are boosting discretionary spending.
