1 of 2
After a vote of no confidence in November, Ion Chicu, an ally of the president, Igor Dodon, was appointed prime minister and parliament approved a new government of the Socialists of the Republic of Moldova (PSRM) and the Democratic Party (PDM).

The PRSM and PDM will want to try to make the new government work. However, tensions between different parts of the political class, which reflect deep cleavages within the electorate, will endure and are likely to lead to further bouts of political instability.

The PDM's return to power ushers in another period of uncertainty over the direction of reform. The Economist Intelligence Unit expects the IMF to improve fiscal and monetary policy credibility, but there will be little progress on institutional reform in the near term.
