Country Report Macedonia 1st Quarter

  • ID: 2388034
  • Country Profile
  • February 2019
  • Region: North Macedonia
  • The Economist Intelligence Unit
1 of 2
The government-led by the Social Democratic Alliance of Macedonia (SDSM), in place since May 2017-has ended a two-year political crisis. It has also improved relations with the EU and, in particular, with Bulgaria and Greece.

However, tensions between the former ruling VMRO-Democratic Party of Macedonian National Unity (VMRO-DPMNE) and the SDSM will persist in the forecast period (2019-23), hampering government effectiveness.

In January 2019 the Macedonian and Greek parliaments approved the Prespa agreement, according to which Macedonia will change its name to the Republic of North Macedonia in exchange for Greece ending its veto on Macedonia's EU and NATO accession.
