The general election held in October 2018 led to political fragmentation, with seven of the 16 parties that contested the election being elected to the 100-seat legislature. Negotiations over the process of government formation were difficult and lengthy, and lasted well into January 2019.

After about three months of negotiations, the government took office in late January 2019. It is a centre-right, five-party coalition, led by Krisjanis Karins of New Unity as prime minister. Mr Karins will retain Latvia's pro-business and pro-European stance.

The Economist Intelligence Unit expects the government to last a full term, to 2022. The coalition has a comfortable majority, holding 61 of the 100 parlia-mentary seats. However, an increase in the number of parties in the coalition and the presence of new, inexperienced parties in government pose risks to political stability.
