Not only is beer the most widely consumed alcoholic beverage globally, but it is also the third most commonly consumed beverage in the world after water and tea. Industry consolidation is a major trend that is impacting the global beer industry, with several mega mergers and acquisitions marking the industry landscape in recent years. The global beer market is particularly being driven by the growth in developing markets, primarily due to the rise in disposable incomes which has led to a growth in the per capita alcohol consumption.

This research analyzes the Global Beer Industry in Michael Porter’s Five Forces Analysis. It uses concepts developed in Industrial Organization (IO) economics to derive five forces that determine the competitive intensity and therefore attractiveness of a market. Porter referred to these forces as the microenvironment, to contrast it with the more general term macro-environment. They consist of those forces close to a company that affect its ability to serve its customers and make a profit. A change in any of the forces normally requires a company to re-assess the marketplace.
