Indonesia's gross domestic energy consumption reached an estimated 261.2m tonnes oil equivalent (toe) in 2019. The Economist Intelligence Unit expects energy consumption to increase to 346m toe by 2029, at an annual growth rate of over 3% during the forecast period (2020-29).

Consumption of coal and natural gas will both increase steadily, while demand growth for petroleum will be slightly slower. Indonesia is one of the world's largest exporters of coal, but its production has fluctuated in recent years. Generation capacity for combustible fuels will increase, but we expect its share of total power generation to fall from an estimated 88% in 2019 to 84% in 2029. Renewables usage for electricity, especially wind and geothermal power, will begin to take off, but we expect non-hydro renewables to account for just 9.9% of total generation capacity and 8.5% of power produced in 2029.

The country will remain a major energy producer and exporter but we expect oil production to fall slightly in 2020-29, owing largely to a lack of investment amid regulatory uncertainty regarding the upstream hydrocarbons sector. The state-owned oil and gas company, Pertamina, has been increasing its holdings in local fields, amid government efforts to improve oil recovery. New exploration is needed to maintain production.
