Owing to the large size of its population, which reached 99m in 2018, Egypt remains the fourth-largest consumer of energy in the Middle East and North African region. Consumption per head is relatively low, reflecting Egypt's still-substantial agricultural sector, much lower reliance on desalination for water supplies and the country's comparatively modest hydrocarbons reserves.

The Economist Intelligence Unit forecasts that gross domestic energy consumption will rise to about 107m tonnes oil equivalent (toe) in 2023, in line with the rate of GDP growth, driven mainly by increases in domestic electricity consumption and a surge in natural gas production from 2017 onwards.

The discovery of the Zohr "supergiant" field, and its rapid development by Eni of Italy, along with a number of fields being brought on stream by BP of the UK, will enable Egypt to become self-sufficient in gas.
