Bahrain is heavily dependent on imports to satisfy its need for animals and animal products, at the cost of home-based production. In an open-market economy, local animal products, especially dairy and eggs, face tough competition from imports. Part of this competition comes from some Gulf States which have the advantage of relatively well-established multifaceted livestock enterprises that started much earlier with more favourable cost structures. Sheep imports in Bahrain are subsidized. Rehabilitation of the national livestock industry would require improvement of the cost structure of locally produced animals and animal products
