Middle East and Africa regions have been a small percentage of the global pharmaceutical sales but it is changing with big companies are going to open production facilities in this region.

In the Middle East with the economy growth to more than 5% in 2012 and the population also growing, there is a growing demand for medicines. Countries like UAE, Turkey and Egypt etc. have huge growth potential.

Africa’s economy is booming due to the relatively stable political scenario in the region and the enormous investments by companies from around the world. In 2011, the African pharmaceutical market was worth more than $23 billion which was less than 2% of the global market but the industry is growing rapidly, driven by countries like South Africa, Nigeria and Ghana etc.

The economy of the Middle East countries grew from 3% to more than 5% in 2012 and the inflation rate has remained relatively constant. With inflation in the region going down from 10.7% in 2013 to 6.2% in 2014, domestic spending is on the rise. Retail, from e-commerce to mom and pop stores, has racked up the biggest gains. Packaging in Africa is fast catching up to meet the growing needs of a continent that is booming with investment from a vast number of foreign players.

Increasing population is directly burdening the food industry. To meet the requirements, different countries and enterprises are exporting their food products across the world. This has given rise to packaging companies who are providing solutions that expands the shelf life of the food product being exported. Traditional packaging products cannot meet the requirements of food products like meat and frozen foods. These constraints have given rise to new technologies like active and intelligent packaging which provide longevity and freshness to the food products being exported.

Middle East and Africa Active and Intelligent packaging market is witnessing a remarkable growth. Increasing demand for these packaging products because of changing lifestyles and demand from manufacturers for longer shelf life is driving this market growth. Governments’ strict regulations regarding food packaging and safety standards are other such factors which are contributing to the market growth.

This instability caused due to extremism and terrorism affects the companies investing in the market and also spooks the future investors. With USA providing lot of support to countries from this region these fears should be allayed. As sanctions against Iran are being lifted gradually this region will grow and prosper.
