India is the world's third-largest energy consumer, using an estimated 935.17m tonnes of oil equivalent (toe) in 2018. A huge population, exceeding 1.3bn, and steady economic growth will keep the country among the world's largest energy consumers and net energy importers during the forecast period (2019-23). The Economist Intelligence Unit expects domestic energy consumption to rise to 1.12bn toe by end-2023. The growth rate would be higher but for supply-side inefficiencies.

Rapid expansion in energy consumption will push up India's carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. The country was the world's fourth-largest emitter of CO2 in 2018-producing about 2.1bn tonnes-after China, the US and the EU. Its CO2 emissions continue to grow, increasing year on year by an estimated 4.2% in 2018.

India has the world's fifth-largest reserves of coal, which will remain its most important fuel during the forecast period (2019-23). Despite new investment in generating capacity, electricity supply will struggle to meet demand and rolling blackouts will persist.
