Almost all devices today can be tested and analyzed to ensure that they perform with the best efficiency. In order for this to take place, it is necessary to ensure that there is proper collection of data. Position sensors are used to determine have far a target object has moved and this is information, which can be used for determining the efficiency of a device. By collecting this data, the wear and tear of an object can be deuced over a period of time. For example, if there is an object, which needs to move only 2 cm in either direction, and after a year it is found that it is moving only 1.9 cm in either direction, there is a slight degradation in the efficiency of the product. This can be tracked over a period whereby an individual can also forecast when the device will fail as a whole.

The target object can be small as a tiny component in a device to as large as the device itself. For example, looking at the automotive sector, the position sensors can be used to determine the displacement of positions in an engine or can also track if there is any change in movement of shock absorbers of the vehicle. The sensor is able to measure the amount of displacement by comparing the change in distance with a fixed point, which is already pre-determined. There have been new developments in position sensors with the latest being non-contact position sensors. Non-contact sensors have a longer life span and hence are more preferred to for automotive and defense applications where wear and tear is considerably high.

The European market is the largest contributor to the position sensor market primarily because of the automotive industry. Europe will be the leading region till the end of the forecast period by which time the APAC region will slowly come to a position of the leading region to the overall market after the forecast period.
