Wireless Charging, or wireless power transfer (WPT) is a method of transmitting power based on electromagnetic induction or resonance technique into various electronic devices such as smartphones, wearable devices, laptops, wireless headphones and many others. The total wireless charging equipment market is forecast to reach $15.2 billion by 2020 with a CAGR of 48.68%. The wireless charging market has been segmented primarily on the basis of technology, such as Magnetic Inductance, Magnetic Resonance, Radio Wave Charging, Microwave Charging and Beam Charging. In Magnetic Inductance, the transmitter and receiver utilize an electromagnetic field to attain maximum charging efficiency; while, under Magnetic Resonance Charging, the magnetic field is precisely tuned to the resonant frequency of the receiver allowing greater charging distances (up to 50mm). Radio Wave Charging uses radio waves to transmit power to receivers at distances ranging as far as 30 feet. Currently, Magnetic Inductance Charging occupies more than 95% share of the wireless charging market. Due to disparate wireless charging standards, three organizations, namely: Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), Power Matters Alliance (PMA) and Alliance for Wireless Power (A4WP) are currently engaged in developing harmonized standards for wireless charging. Recently, A4WP and PMA have merged for developing standards concerned with general wireless charging techniques; whereas, WPC is involved in creating standards, specifically using magnetic inductance and magnetic resonance techniques.
