Energy is a critical factor for socio-economic development. The energy strategy of any country focuses at efficiency and security to provide environment friendly source of energy. The conventional sources of fuel or fossil fuel resources are limited, polluting, non-renewable and therefore should be used prudently. On the other hand renewable sources of energy are non-polluting and inexhaustible. Biodiesel can satisfy the need of energy in an environment friendly way and cost effective manner thereby reducing dependence on fossil fuels. This is an excellent alternative for fuels used in diesel engines and is generally derived from pure vegetable oil, animal fats and waste cooking oil. Pure vegetable oil source generally include soybean, canola, sunflowers and few others. No engine modifications are required when using these alternatives as a fuel and can be used in marine, automotive, mining and electrical generation applications. Recreational boats, inland commercial and ocean-going commercial ships and research vessels use biodiesel which is non-toxic and possess high lubricity.

Blends with diesel fuel are generally indicated as ‘Bx’, where ‘x’ represent the percentage of biodiesel in the blend. Based on blends commercially available, this market is classified as B100, B20, B5 and others. B5 indicates that the blend contains 5% biodiesel and B100 indicates pure form. These fuels involve zero sulfur dioxide emission and possess lower health risks due to reduced emission of carcinogenic substances.
