Trends

In 2015, low beef and poultry supplies, a result of a smaller cattle population and avian flu that permeated American chicken facilities during that year, fuelled significant price increases for both of these meat products in the US. These price increases resulted in positive value growth for beef and poultry products in 2015, even as volume sales were being driven down by high prices and limited availability. This trend was mirrored by the processed meat and seafood category as a whole, as processed meat comprises an 88% volume share of the category. The opposite occurred in 2016, with processed meat experiencing 1% volume growth and a 2% current value decline as increased beef and poultry production overcompensated for the lower 2015 supplies, flooding the market with a large amount of these meat products that subsequently drove prices further down. While overall consumption of beef and poultry products increased in 2016 as consumers were attracted to lower prices and supplies were readily available, processed meat nonetheless experienced value losses. As in 2015, this trend was also reflected within the greater processed meat and seafood category, which recorded 1% volume growth and a 1% current value decline in 2016.

Competitive Landscape

Kraft Heinz continued to lead processed meat and seafood in 2016 with an 11% value share and sales of USD3.8 billion. The company is present primarily in chilled processed meat, in which it held a 17% value share. Although it maintained its strong standing atop the category, Kraft Heinz registered a 5% current value decline in 2016 as nine of the top ten companies within processed meat and seafood posted flat or declining value growth rates, reflective of the category as a whole.

Prospects

Processed meat and seafood is expected to post a volume CAGR of 1% and value CAGR of 2% at constant 2016 prices over the forecast period to reach sales of 4.9 million tonnes and USD37.6 billion in 2021. Much of this growth will be spurred by the consistent, gradual growth of chilled processed meat and frozen processed meat, both of which are expected to record 1% volume CAGRs and 2% value CAGRs at constant 2016 prices. At the same time, the continued growth of American seafood consumption will also help the category’s growth over the forecast period.
