European silage inoculants market is expected to cross US$ 112 million by 2020 with an estimated CAGR of 4.3%. European countries are leading the market with 40% of the global share. Spain, UK, and France are the major markets. Rise in processed meat industry, increasing demand for quality meat, both for consumption and processing industry, along with increasing cost factor, are driving the market for inoculants in the region. The other alternatives like compound feed are affecting the market negatively. Approval for product line expansion and stringent regulations make the market place challenging in the region. With new technologies and efficient techniques, the markets hope to stay afloat and consolidate their growth trends.

Major bacteria types that act as silage inoculants are Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus buchneri, Pediococcus pentosaceus and Enterococcus faecium. They are used to ensure proper lactic acid fermentation. Lactobacillus plantarum is the major inoculant leading the market with 26% share, due to its desirable lactic acid fermentation process. Lactobacillus plantarum is also used in mixed form with other species, such as L.buchneri and others.

The market is expected to grow due to the pressure from government to increase local production of meat, and reduce costs incurred on meat imports. Cereal crops have a major share in the market, 34%. Cereals are easily ensiled, as they have high water soluble carbohydrate levels. Corn, barley, and sorghum are the major cereal crops used as silage. However, legume based silages would drive the application segment for inoculants at a CAGR of 4.7% during 2015-2020.

The major players are focused on research and development in efficient production processes and foraying into newer markets to consolidate their market share. Europe anyway is a preferred destination for foreign players who try to enter the new markets in the region.
