About Satellite-Based Augmentation Systems

SBASs such as WAAS, EGNOS, GAGAN, and MSAS are systems that support regional or wide-area augmentation, through the use of multiple satellite-based broadcast. SBAS messages are broadcast through geostationary satellites that cover vast areas. These systems also comprise multiple ground-based stations that take measurements from one or more GNSS satellites.

Analysts forecast the global satellite-based augmentation system market to grow at a CAGR of 5.2% during the period 2016-2020.

The author of the report recognizes the following companies as the key players in the Global Satellite Based Augmentation Systems: Garmin, Raytheon, Rockwell Collins, Thales and Universal Avionics

Other Prominent Vendors in the market are: Advanced Navigation & Positioning, Comsoft, Copperchase, Honeywell International, Intelcan Technosystems, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Saab AB, and Searidge Technologies.

Commenting on the report, an analyst from the research team said: “Along with the modernization of airports and upgrade from ground-based to satellite-based systems, aircraft also need to be retrofitted with new ATC equipment. Considering the large fleet of aircraft already in operation globally, retrofitting of aircraft for new ATC equipment will likely propel the global satellite-based augmentation system market in the future as well.”

According to the report, it is necessary to maximize the utilization of the available airspace in a safe and efficient manner. The aviation industry requires substantial investment and improvement in ATC systems. There have been several such activities worldwide in the upgrade of ATC infrastructure. Such efforts have helped the growth of the global satellite-based augmentation system market.

Further, the report states that the high cost of acquisition and the maintenance of a modern ATC system is one of the hurdles for the wide-scale implementation of satellite-based augmentation systems.

The study was conducted using an objective combination of primary and secondary information including inputs from key participants in the industry. The report contains a comprehensive market and vendor landscape in addition to a SWOT analysis of the key vendors.
