The South American Feed Probiotics market was valued at USD 136 million in 2015 and is expected to grow into a USD 193.8 million by 2020 growing at a CAGR of 7.2% during the forecast period. Probiotics can be defined as “live microorganisms which, when administered in adequate amounts, confer health benefits on the host”. They are one form of alternative feed supplement, or “functional food” which may be used for prophylaxis in animals. They enhance the animals by improving the gut performance, increasing the intake of nutrients, boosting the immunity and by balancing the pH.

The report is segmented on the basis of type, application, and geography. Numerous Probiotic formulations exist for use in animals; however the majority are based on lactic acid producing bacteria, mainly bifidobacteria and lactobacilli, although Bacillus and Streptococcus form the active ingredients of some products. Probiotics are widely used in farm livestock, companion animals and in aquaculture, as they are principally associated with reducing clinical disease and increasing growth rates. In this regard poultry occupies the larger market share followed by swine and ruminants. On the basis of geography, Brazil dominates the region followed by Argentina and other regions. The key players in the marker are Lallemand, DuPont, Life Products INC and Provita.
