About the Video Streaming Market in China

China has the largest broadband user base in the world, with the majority of users accessing the internet through mobile devices. Despite high broadband penetration, China has one of the slowest broadband speeds globally. This trend is expected to change, following the network architecture improvements such as the completion of the two-year project to increase the number of nationwide internet traffic hubs from three to ten. DSL was the initial driving force for the growth of fixed broadband in China, which was followed later by Ethernet passive optical network (EPON) fiber and gigabit passive optical network (GPON) fiber.
China will be investing an estimated $22 billion by 2020 to expand broadband internet to remote and underserved parts of the country. More than 20 million households will gain better internet services as part of the plan. The plan covers 98% the country's villages and includes 50,000 villages that currently do not have access to broadband.

The analysts forecast the video streaming market in China to grow at a CAGR of 29.74% during the period 2016-2020.

International series such as NCIS, The Big Bang Theory, Good Wife, and The Practice were banned from sites like Sohu TV, iQIYI, and Youku. This led to an increase in the piracy of the television series in China. The Chinese government is working on launching a state-owned video streaming service to control piracy and provide a legal and cost-effective method for users to access Hollywood and other premium content without breaking the law.”

According to the report, a key growth driver is the demand for affordable entertainment. In 2015, it was estimated that approximately 26 hours per week were spent by the Chinese population on the internet. Video streaming is very popular among the population under 12-29 years in China who look up affordable and quality entertainment modes. More than 80% of internet users watched online videos more than twice a week in 2015. The number of video streaming users in China is approximately 480 million, which is 71% of its total internet users.

Further, the report states that one challenge that could hamper market growth is government restrictions. The ban and strict censorship board of China makes the sharing and uploading of content very difficult in China.
