Modern integrated ORs are built with state of the art technology aiming to maximize efficiency, reduce
surgery time and improve surgery success rates. These integrated ORs are becoming increasingly
specialized and require products that can meet the demands of surgeons.

An operating room that would be considered fully integrated can be defined as possessing the following
components: - A routing system which enables delivery of data, voice and video services over an IP network.
Essentially, an integrated system must have the ability to extend audio-visual communication
from the OR, whether for teleconferencing, resident teaching or telesurgery.
- A touchscreen command center that is capable of receiving and displaying information and
video from other devices in the OR. This device can also control equipment settings and relay
video and information to areas outside of the OR. Often, surgical lights are also controlled
through these systems.
- A digital recording device that can handle HD video and image recording. These systems can
differ in the level of functionality. Some may be able to record multiple video sources at a time
while others can only record one.
- A pre-planned ergonomic design that optimizes the usage of OR floor space with overhead
equipment booms, cabinets and/or other features.
- The ability to electronically send/receive diagnostic images to and from the OR, either through
a picture archiving and communication system (PACS), radiology information system (RIS),
hospital information system (HIS) or similar systems. Therefore, these systems have DICOM
integration and EMR.
