Acetic acid, also known as ethanoic acid, is an organic chemical compound best recognized for giving vinegar its sour taste and pungent smell. It is one of the simplest carboxylic acids (the second-simplest, after formic acid) and has the chemical formula CH3COOH. It is a colorless liquid that when undiluted is also called glacial acetic acid.

A majority of the acetic acid that is produced is used to produce vinyl acetate monomer, or VAM. Vinyl acetate monomer (VAM) is a building block that is used in many industries to make paints, adhesives, packaging, and more. Acetic acid is a chemical reagent for the production of chemical compounds. The largest single use of acetic acid is in the production of vinyl acetate monomer, closely followed by acetic anhydride and ester production. The volume of acetic acid used in vinegar is comparatively small.

Acetic acid is the sour-tasting compound that gives that characteristic tang to vinegar, pickles, and sourdough bread. The chemical bonds in starches and sugars may be disrupted by acetic acid. Other theories are that acetic acid causes slower digestion or faster rates of transfer of sugar from your bloodstream to your muscles.

The global market for Acetic acid was estimated to be $XX billion in 2015. The global market for Acetic acid is estimated to grow at a CAGR of XX% and is forecast to reach $XX billion by 2021. The acetic acid market is forecast to have the highest growth of XX% during the forecast period 2016-2021. Electroplating and Laboratory Chemicals are the major end-users for acetic acid.

North America is the leading market for acetic acid. Asia-pacific region is forecast to have highest growth in the next few years due to growing adoption of acetic acid in industrial applications. Asia-pacific acetic acid market accounts to XX% of the global market for Acetic Acid and is the fastest growing market followed by Europe. North America and Asia together are estimated to occupy a share of more than XX% in 2016.
