In Europe, sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is one of the leading causes of death, responsible for between 250,000 and 450,000 deaths annually. Many of these deaths were attributed to ventricular fibrillation. Implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) continually monitor the heart and deliver appropriate therapy when an abnormal heart rhythm is detected. Clinical trials have shown that ICDs significantly improve the probability of patient survival compared to prescribed anti-arrhythmic drugs, such as amiodarone.
