Display consists of two parts-frontplane and backplane. Frontplane forms the image, which the user can see, while backplane is an array of TFTs that control the pixel in the frontplane to turn on and off. Frontplane in LCD comprises color filters, liquid crystals, electrodes, and polarizers. LCDs and OLEDs are frontplane technologies, while a-Si, LTPS, and metal oxide are backplane technologies.
LCD panels using TFT-LCD glass substrates have improved optical properties such as contrast and image quality. TFT-LCDs form the display area for products, which include LCD TVs, desktop PCs, and mobile computing devices. Relative ease of displaying content is one of the major advantages of TFT-LCDs over other display technologies. Large area TFT-LCD manufacturers are developing displays, with emphasis on energy-saving, improved image quality, costs, and compact form factors. This can be easily achieved by using metal oxide TFT-based LCD displays.
