About Atherectomy Devices

Physicians use atherectomy, a minimally invasive surgical procedure, to remove plaque that blocks vein grafts or coronary arteries. Plaque can also accumulate in the peripheral or coronary blood vessels. Physicians use a catheter that has a sharp blade at the end for the ablation, abrasion, or excision of the atherosclerotic plaque.

Atherectomy helps reduce the burden of soft calcific plaque, minimize vessel wall trauma, and change the vessel compliance that leads to a decrease in the need for bail-out stenting. The procedure can be performed along with balloon angioplasty and stent placement or as a stand-alone treatment option. In the market, available atherectomy devices are based on laser (excimer), rotational, directional, and orbital technologies.

The analysts forecast the global atherectomy devices market to grow at a CAGR of 5.67% during the period 2016-2020.

New Report Released: - Global Atherectomy Devices Market 2016-2020

The author of the report recognizes the following companies as the key players in the global atherectomy devices market: Boston Scientific, Cardiovascular Systems, Medtronic, and Spectranetics.

Other Prominent Vendors in the market are: Avinger, and Volcano.

Commenting on the report, an analyst from the research team said: “One of the major market trends leading to market growth will be increase in M&A. Vendors enter into M&A to extend their product offerings, increase their market shares, and expand their operations. They acquire other companies to enhance their R&D capabilities for manufacturing innovative devices that meet consumer needs. Acquisition of other companies allows vendors access to the product portfolio of the acquired company. M&A as a business strategy helps new players enter the market. The competition in the market has become intense, as many vendors such as Boston Scientific and Medtronic are trying to increase their market share by undergoing M&A.”

According to the report, prevalence of peripheral artery disease will be the major driver for market growth. The peripheral artery disease is a circulatory condition characterized by the contraction of the peripheral arteries resulting in limited blood supply to the stomach, legs, arms, and head. This disease is similar to coronary artery disease in its prevalence worldwide. Increased smoking, hypertension, high cholesterol levels, and diabetes are major risk factors for the disease. Genetics and co-morbidities can also cause this disease. In 2015, the American Heart Association estimated that about 200 million people worldwide have peripheral artery disease. Individuals with peripheral artery disease are 4-5 fold more likely to have a heart attack or stroke.

Further, the report states that stringent regulatory framework will be a challenge faced by the market. Strict product approval processes and safety regulations make it difficult for manufacturers to launch new products in the market. Regulatory bodies have imposed a stringent labeling requirement and regulatory framework for atherectomy devices. Regulatory agencies consider some of these as high-risk devices that need to undergo safety examination to demonstrate medical efficacy before approval. A device's failure to comply with regulations can restrict its approval and delay its launch. Regulatory approval processes are time consuming. Vendors extensively invest in the development and approval of their devices. Delay in the approval of devices can negatively affect vendors' profit margins.

The study was conducted using an objective combination of primary and secondary information including inputs from key participants in the industry. The report contains a comprehensive market and vendor landscape in addition to a SWOT analysis of the key vendors.
