Graphite is a crystalline form of carbon, which is a semimetal and a native element mineral. It is considered as one of the allotropes of carbon, and has distinct structure and properties. Graphite is the highest grade of coal, and has stable form of carbon under standard conditions. It has characteristics of metal and non-metal with high thermal and electrical conductivity. It is highly refractory and chemically inert with less absorption of neutrons and X-rays that enables it to be used as the main material in nuclear applications.

According to the report, growth in end-user industries will be a key driver for market growth. The automotive, mechanical machinery, and infrastructure and construction industries are the main users of steel and have been driving the steel demand for many years. The infrastructure and construction sector, which accounts for more than 51.53% of the world steel consumption, is expected to post a CAGR of 7.6 % until 2020. Similarly, the machinery and automotive industries, which account for roughly 14.84% and 12% of the global steel consumption in 2015 respectively, are poised to grow at a higher rate during the forecast period. This will lead to a constant increase in steel demand over the next few years, thereby fueling the growth of graphite electrodes.

Further, the report states that one of the challenges for the market will be hazardous occupational exposure to the workers. The mortality rate of manufacturing workers has increased over recent years due to exposure to hazardous materials. The manufacturing of graphite electrode leads workers to get exposed to coal tar and other materials containing silica and graphite dusts, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), and asbestos. Exposure of workers in a graphite electrode facility to coal tar pitches, crystalline silica, carcinogenic agents, and PAH consisting of benzopyrene, benzanthracene, and dibenzanthracene, could lead to increased risk of bladder and lung cancers. An investigation was conducted to investigate the mortality rate of workers in a graphite electrode manufacturing facility, which concluded that the workers had an excess mortality rate with liver cancer and cirrhosis, and other chronic diseases of the liver.
