Optical amplifiers are used in the field of communication. This is a device which is used to amplify an input optical signal without any requirement for the signal to be first converted into an electrical output which would otherwise be the case for other types of amplifiers. Optical amplifiers are able to do so in conjunction with wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) in which communication takes place across a number of channels along the same fiber. With the aid of optical amplifiers, terabits of data can be transmitted across vast distances without any loss in signal quality. Thus, optical amplifiers coupled with optical cables which in themselves ensure that signals can be transmitted over large distances with minimal signal loss can now transit even more data with the same efficiency. Without optical amplifiers, the signal would have to be amplified over and over again at regular intervals for cables which were spanning hundreds of kilometres. This would have resulted in more equipment being purchased which would have increased the overall installation cost and also increased the chances for multiple components to come under the purview of maintenance. An optical amplifier with a single optical fibre spanning a distance of over hundred kilometres will be more streamlined without the need for multiple equipment and will also reduce the chances for multiple failures along the length of the cable.

The biggest driver for this market lies with the telecom operators who are increasing their 4G coverage across the globe. Further to this, telecom companies have also seen that the contribution of voice data to media data has been shrinking year on year thereby indicating that large packets of data are being sent on a regular basis as against when only voice calls were was the major data contributor. Lowering prices of data services are allowing people to use their data services to the fullest thereby increasing the volume of traffic on a daily basis. As such a system which is able to transmit the data without any loss and also have the ability to be upgraded is absolutely required. Optical amplifiers coupled with optical cables offer these advantages.

Another key driver for the market is the growth anticipated in the data centre market which in itself is an addressable market for optical amplifiers. Every day, real estate is purchased for the development of data centres spanning hectares of land across the globe. These data centres take years to be constructed but are done so with the option of upgrading in terms of adding more racks for the increasing volume of data that is transmitted year on year.

The optical amplifier market is expected to generate a total revenue of around $3 billion by 2021.
