About Autopilot System

Autopilot system is a major component of an aircraft, which is used to operate the aircraft without any pilot supervision. It consists of four major components - the computer system, actuator, gyros, and global positioning service (GPS). The computer system is used to program the autopilot system and helps the pilots to interact with the GPS and the gyros, and transfers the data to the actuator, which then moves the aircraft.

Autopilot systems enhance the aircraft control capability of a pilot and increase the cockpit efficiency by placing the aircraft in an auto-mode. It also reduces the overall operating costs. Currently, the role of autopilots has broadened significantly from pilot assistance to automated landing and taking full control of aircraft in emergency situations. However, autopilots can never replace a human operator but only assist in various operations such as monitoring the weather, systems, and trajectory.

The analysts forecast the global autopilot systems market to grow at a CAGR of 4.7% during the period 2016-2020.

New Report Released: - Global Autopilot Systems Market 2016-2020

The author of the report recognizes the following companies as the key players in the global autopilot systems market: Genesys Aerosystems, Honeywell International, Lockheed Martin, and Rockwell Collins.

Other Prominent Vendors in the market are: Garmin, Airware, Cloud Cap Technology, MicroPilot¸ and Trimble Navigation.

Commenting on the report, an analyst from the research team said: “Technological advancements will be a key trend for market growth. The incident of aircraft MH 370 missing has created ample chaos in the commercial aviation industry as the reasons for its disappearance still remains undetected. Keeping such events in view, the aerospace companies are developing their R&D technologies to prevent future aircraft accidents. Thus, airlines are emphasizing on sophisticated, autonomous technology that can control the flight in case of any danger.”

According to the report, one of the key drivers for market growth will be increasing demand for automation. Automation enhances flight operational safety and efficiency through providing low operating costs and greater profits. This is especially critical for commercial airlines, which support millions of air travellers. In 2014, the airlines carried a passenger traffic of 838.4 million passengers on more than 8.5 million flights, globally. In the same year, a survey of airline pilots was carried out, which reported that the pilots operating Boeing 777s spent just seven minutes manually piloting their aircraft during a flight, whereas, those operating Airbus planes, spent half that time. Thus, the growing demand for automation in aircraft is driving the autopilot systems market.

Further, the report states that while the autopilot system is being widely approved, the high cost associated with it becomes a major challenge for the airlines. Installing or upgrading an autopilot system is one of the complex, expensive, and time-consuming avionics processes. Depending on their installations, autopilot systems interface with multiple systems like flight controls, engine controls, electrical system, and electrical system.

The study was conducted using an objective combination of primary and secondary information including inputs from key participants in the industry. The report contains a comprehensive market and vendor landscape in addition to a SWOT analysis of the key vendors.
