About Optical Isolators

Optical isolators are passive devices that enable transmission of light in only one direction. The main purpose of these isolators is to avoid any light from reflecting back into the optical fiber, as there would be backscattering and feedback problems in case the reflected light enters the source.

As a result of this superior attribute, optical isolators are used for high data rate transceivers and transponders. In general, optical isolators allow all the light to pass in one direction and block the light in the reverse direction. Optical isolators are considered critical optical components in medical, industrial, and research lasers to avoid optical damage and noise by blocking reflection beams.

The analysts forecast the global optical isolator market to grow at a CAGR of 6.47% during the period 2016-2020.

New Report Released: - Global Optical Isolator Market 2016-2020

The author of the report recognizes the following companies as the key players in the global optical isolator market: AC Photonics, AFW Technologies, Agiltron, Aistana, Corning, DK Photonics Technology, FOCI Fiber Optic Communications, General Photonics, Opto-Link, Thorlabs, and SENKO Advanced Components.

Other Prominent Vendors in the market are: Accelink Technologies, AOC Technologies, Ascentta, Edmund Optics, Electro-Optics Technology, Integrated Photonics, Kyocera, and Microwave Photonics Systems.

Commenting on the report, an analyst from the research team said: “Growing number of data centers will be a key trend for market growth. With the rise of machine-to-machine communication, IoT applications are generating a tremendous amount of new data every minute. These data have to be managed, stored, and retrieved in numerous data centers located around the world. The growing amount of data in the cloud necessitates the development of data centers. As the cloud computing platform and services are growing exponentially, telecom network operators and cloud service providers are investing heavily in building data centers across the globe. For instance, in July 2014, Tata Communications announced investment worth $200 million to expand its data center capacity in India to 10 lakh square feet over the next three years.”

According to the report, one of the key drivers for market growth will be growing demand for high definition end-to-end video transmission. There is an enduring demand for satellite end-to-end video transmission. SES has a reach of 313 million TV households covering 1.1 billion population, spread across 84 million in North America, 24 million in Latin America, 154 million in Europe followed by 44 million APAC and lastly Africa with 7 million. Not just the broadcast facility, but the satellite operators are looking to provide high quality video transmission from HD to UHD. To facilitate 4k UHD TV, Intelsat in 2013 demonstrated the first 4k end-to-end video transmission via satellite in collaboration with Ericsson. For the demonstration, Intelsat's galaxy 13 satellite was used and the 100 Mbps video feed was encoded and decoded using Ericsson's AVP 2000 contribution encoders and RX8200 receivers capable of handling 4k UHD resolutions. As the demand for a high quality end-to-end video transmission increases, it also requires more number of transponders with higher bandwidth and throughput. With the increasing demand for transponders, the demand for optical isolators also increase, thereby leading to the growth of the market.

Further, the report states that one of the major challenges faced by the vendors in the market is the high initial investment in deploying optical networks, which is primarily due to the high optical component cost and high initial investment from the service providers. For instance, the price of a desktop computer network interface card (NIC) for 10 Mbps or 100 Mbps Ethernet on Cat 5 ranges between $60-$80 while the price of a fiber network interface card (NIC) is in the range of $100-$400. The price variation for copper among different vendors is close. The cost of fibers varies widely as they have numerous cable and connector styles.

The study was conducted using an objective combination of primary and secondary information including inputs from key participants in the industry. The report contains a comprehensive market and vendor landscape in addition to a SWOT analysis of the key vendors.
