Microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) is purified, partially depolymerized cellulose prepared by treating alpha-cellulose, obtained as a pulp from fibrous plant material, with mineral acids as cellulose is abundant in plants. MCC can also be made from fungi, algae, bacteria. It can be used as a texturizer, anti-caking agent, bulking agent during food production. MCC is also used in pharmaceutical industry. MCC is given to patients in the form of tablets, capsules, sachets and pallets. MCC is also used in cosmetics industry as texturizer and thickening agent.
