Butyric acid is a carboxylic acid which exhibits an unpleasant smell, having an acrid taste and is usually found in the milk of farm animals. Butyric acid is industrially manufactured through fermentation of starch or sugar, with the addition of putrefying cheese, and calcium carbonate to neutralize the acids formed in the procedure. Butyric acid is also manufactured at a relatively low rate, yield and concentration since the traditional fermentation process is not yet economically viable. It is also manufactured via chemical synthesis on an industrial scale which involves the oxidation of butyraldehyde. Although fermentation is comparatively expensive than chemical synthesis of butyric acid, it has witnessed an increase in demand owing to consumer demand for natural and organic products.
Increasing production of butyric acid has been witnessed from processing wastes and agriculture industry and it is used in a wide range of applications such as food, chemical and pharmaceutical industries. The research and development activities have been directed towards development of alternative fuel sources owing to increase in petroleum price and growing demand for clean energy sources.
