About Li-Fi

The incapability of light to penetrate obstructions and walls ensures that data transmitted will be limited to the room or space. This property makes Li-Fi more secure than Wi-Fi. In addition, Li-Fi does not cause electromagnetic interference. Although the LED bulb must be kept on for transmitting the signal, it can be lowered as per needs.

Data can be transferred using Li-Fi technology through all types of light, regardless of their spectrum. Moreover, Li-Fi ensures that a user does not necessarily have to be in a Wi-Fi enabled region, and can surf the internet by being around a source of light.

LED bulbs are switched on and off at rapid speeds to transmit data, with the data being registered by specially manufactured equipment. This will make it possible to offer wireless internet connectivity at speeds of up to 10 Gbps, which is about 250 times faster than existing high-speed broadband connections. Rather than having incredible speeds and latency, one of the major advantages of Li-Fi is that it is transmitted by LED bulbs, which can bring fast, highly dependable connectivity to places (such as on airplanes, submarines, nuclear power stations, and hospitals) where Wi-Fi fails or it is not allowed.”

According to the report, IoT enabled by Li-Fi will be a key driver for market growth. The IoT uses several technologies such as RFID, sensors, barcodes, and GPS. These technologies are used to monitor and manage the physical assets in an organization. For instance, RFID tagged goods are easier to track in the supply chain. Also, RFID helps manage and maintain inventory. This increases the efficiency of the enterprise and improves business values. With the help of the IoT, every device or asset of an organization is interconnected with other assets. In addition, enterprises are witnessing a significant improvement in business processes with the adoption of the IoT. Closer monitoring of business processes leads to more effective decisions in real time.

Further, the report states that the receivers use an imaging sensor or photodiode for receiving signals. Photodiodes are used in stationary devices, and mobile devices use the imaging sensor due to the larger field of vision. However, the presence of several photodiodes makes the operation slow, and also consume more energy. This affects the overall data rate, as the imaging sensor is designed for capturing images and videos and not for communication. Hence, it is a challenge to design the receiver that offers strength to device movements and FOV misalignments. The receiver should operate using minimum amounts of energy in order to be useful on battery-powered mobile devices and also provide high-speed Li-Fi.
