About Foot Drop

Foot drop is a gait abnormality, which causes weakness and paralysis of the muscle that lifts the front foot. It may be caused by the disorder of the nerves and might be the result of injuries, stroke or conditions such as multiple sclerosis and cerebral palsy. Foot drop usually affects one foot, but sometimes both feet may be affected. It might be temporary or permanent, based on the cause. The peroneal nerve controls the muscles or tendons that lift the foot. The peroneal nerve may be exposed to trauma as it runs just under the skin on the outer side of the knee. The damage to peroneal nerve causes foot drop.

The analysts forecast the global foot drop implants market to grow at a CAGR of 9.57% during the period 2016-2020.

New Report Released: - Global Foot Drop Implants Market 2016-2020

The author of the report recognizes the following companies as the key players in the global foot drop implants market: Arthrex, Bioness, Finetech Medical, Ottobock, Stryker, and Wright Medical.

Other Prominent Vendors in the market are: aap Implantate, Acumed, Agent Medical, BioMedical Enterprises, Biomet, BioPro, Cayenne Medical, DePuy Orthopaedics, DT MedTech, Flower Orthopedics, Instratek, Integra LifeSciences, Lima, Merete Technologies, Mondeal Medical Systems, M? Orthopedics, Nextremity Solutions, Ortosintese, PONTiS Orthopaedics, Shanghai MicroPort Orthopedics, Smith & Nephew, Surgival, Synergie Ingénierie Médicale, Tornier, Vilex, and Zimmer Biomet.

Commenting on the report, an analyst from the research team said: “Advances in technology will be a key trend for market growth. The recent technological advances in the industry are expected to have a positive impact on the market growth. The market has witnessed the emergence of the STIMuSTEP and ActiGait systems. STIMuSTEP system is an implanted system with electrodes embedded into the epineurium of peroneal nerve’s profound and superficial branches. The implanted receiver is placed under the skin to receive power and control signals from the control unit. The control unit is worn on a belt under the knee and is positioned on top of the skin receiver unit. ActiGait system is used to communicate wirelessly with a control unit.”

According to the report, increasing sports-related injuries and road traffic accidents will be a key driver for market growth. The growing incidence of sports-related injuries is expected to fuel the market growth. Most of the sports injuries lead to the damage or compression of the peroneal nerve. According to American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, foot and ankle injuries account for 25% of sports-related injuries. According to International Association of Athletic Federation, approximately 25,000 individuals experience foot and ankle injuries every day in the US, as compared with France with 6,000. Ankle injuries account for 25% of injuries in athletics, 17%-29% of injuries in soccer, and 21%-53% of injuries in basketball.

Further, the report states that the technical complications associated with the use of foot drop implants may hamper the growth prospects. The currently available functional electric stimulator devices in the market are improved versions of the introductory products. However, these devices are not completely free of technical side effects, including low selectivity of muscle recruitment to electrode placement, difficulty in inserting, pain, and skin reactions. Further, the accurate timing of stimulation when walking is a challenge for the device. Also, there are problems involved in the placement of the electrodes for effective stimulation.

The study was conducted using an objective combination of primary and secondary information including inputs from key participants in the industry. The report contains a comprehensive market and vendor landscape in addition to a SWOT analysis of the key vendors.
