About Automotive Reconfigurable Instrument Cluster

The interest of original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in modifying the instrument cluster to enhance user experience, offer more useful information, and at the same time improve the aesthetics of the vehicle have collectively lead to several innovative versions of the instrument cluster. Electronic instrument clusters have been in the market as early as the 1970s. However, the recent trend skewing from analog to digital systems is paving a conducive technological environment to enable reconfiguration of instrument clusters.

In line with this, OEMs are commercializing the same in several vehicle variants (not confining to high-end cars). It is for this reason that the instrument clusters that bear a thin film transistor-liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) screen as display (as can be reconfigured) can be referred to as automotive reconfigurable instrument cluster.

The analysts forecast the global automotive reconfigurable instrument cluster market to grow at a CAGR of 19.13% during the period 2016-2020.

New Report Released: - Global Automotive Reconfigurable Instrument Cluster Market 2016-2020

The author of the report recognizes the following companies as the key players in the global automotive reconfigurable instrument clusters: Bosch, Continental, Denso, and Visteon

Other Prominent Vendors in the market are: Alpine Electronics, Delphi, Innolux, Japan Display, Luxoft, Mitsubishi Electric, Nippon Seiki, QNX, Rightware, and Sharp

Commenting on the report, an analyst from the research team said: “Since the connectivity feature can also be a part of the fully automotive reconfigurable instrument cluster because of its integration abilities, automotive reconfigurable instrument cluster may be prone to cybersecurity threat. Therefore, Tier-1 players and OEMs have to take into account of the same while developing the fully automotive reconfigurable instrument cluster modes that offer connectivity features. The displayed information can be controlled or manipulated using the same touch screen. Therefore, the future instrument clusters have to support various solutions to counter the potential effects of cybersecurity breach.”

According to the report, reconfigurable instrument clusters exhibit significant customizing abilities without the need for additional hardware. Several OEMs and Tier-1 players are working on the software components to enhance the functionalities of digital instrument clusters (both hybrid and fully digital that are reconfigurable). This keeps the cost under control even for additional features, at the same time allowing the user to reap the benefits of the enhanced software added on to the existing product.

Further, the report states that such high cost pressures are challenging OEMs to introduce advanced features from the high-end car segment to the low-end without hiking sticker prices. Fully automotive reconfigurable instrument clusters are still at a nascent stage and are expensive, and therefore these pose a challenge to OEMs to introduce the same beyond the high-end cars segment.

The study was conducted using an objective combination of primary and secondary information including inputs from key participants in the industry. The report contains a comprehensive market and vendor landscape in addition to a SWOT analysis of the key vendors.
