There are strict standards set by the governments of different countries worldwide to curb carbon emissions. The use of ultracapacitors is gaining popularity due to their environment-friendly energy storage. As the increased emission of carbon dioxide (CO2) results in global warming, governments are enforcing stricter rules to reduce the same. Although the complete elimination of emissions is not possible, a significant reduction is, however, possible. Automotive manufacturers are shifting from ICE-propelled vehicles to electric energy. Replacing electrolyte batteries in cars by ultracapacitor reduces the carbon emission to the environment significantly.

Further, the report states that one major challenge in the market is low energy density leading to shift of demand toward batteries. The main disadvantage of ultracapacitors is low energy density (i.e., the amount of energy stored per unit weight is much smaller than that of the battery). A battery has an energy density of 20-150 Wh/kg while ultracapacitors have only 5-15 Wh/kg. However, research is being carried out to overcome this shortfall by using different forms of carbons such as activated carbons, carbon nanotubes, and carbon aerogels. Ultracapacitors have higher self-discharge rate than batteries, which makes them harder to replace than batteries.
