About Selective Catalytic Reduction

SCR is used for controlling the emission levels of Nitrogen oxide from diesel engines. These are fitted in the exhaust system of the vehicles. SCR is a system that converts nitrogen oxides into nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and water. The system uses diesel exhaust fluid (DEF), which is essentially a liquid reductant agent that is injected into the exhaust stream of a diesel engine. DEF basically constitutes of automotive grade urea containing synthetic ammonia and carbon dioxide.

New Report Released: - Global Selective Catalytic Reduction Market For Diesel Commercial Vehicles 2016-2020

Commenting on the report, an analyst from the research team said: “One of latest trends in the market is emergence of single module aftertreatment device. Cummins has launched an aftertreatment system that combines SCR, diesel oxidizing catalyst, and diesel particulate filter (DPF) into a single module called single module aftertreatment. The system will meet fuel-efficiency and greenhouse gas standards for EPA 2017. The system claims to have more ash holding capabilities since it is a combination of DPF and SCR, eliminating the use of EGR. Compared to their earlier versions, this would subsequently lessen the complexity of the engines.”

According to the report, one of the primary drivers in the market is government regulations on vehicular emission levels. Government bodies across the world are formulating various vehicular emission norms to check particulate vehicle emissions due to the alarming rise of health hazards caused due to vehicular pollution. Euro emission standards formulated by the European government, Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFÉ) standards formulated by the US government, and the Japanese new long-term emission standards all define the acceptable limits of vehicular emission with the focus to regulate pollutants released from automobiles.

Further, the report states that one major challenge in the market is effective infrastructure for distribution of urea solution to SCR installed trucks. SCR technology controls NOx levels by using automotive grade urea as a reducing agent. Automotive grade urea is the source of the liquid-reductant agent injected by SCR in the exhaust stream of diesel engines. The injection of urea into the exhaust system of vehicles sets off a chemical reaction that converts nitrogen oxides into water, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide. The exhaust gas is then expelled through the tailpipe.
