Asia-Pacific feed prebiotics is expected to cross US$142.7 million by 2020 with a CAGR of 13.5%. Feed Prebiotics can be defined as “non-digestible food ingredients that beneficially affect the host by selectively stimulating the growth and activity of one or a limited number of bacteria in the colon”. Prebiotics primarily prevent disease among the livestock. Prebiotics have also been shown to stimulate the immune system of host animals thus improving animal health.

Feed prebiotics are important ingredients that are combined with basic feed mix to provide essential nutrition to animals and improve their overall growth. The main advantage of prebiotics is that they can be added to animal feed without losing efficacy during the heat treatment of feed processing. Prebiotics are widely used as an additive in livestock, pet and aqua feed, as they are principally associated with reducing clinical disease and increasing growth rates.

Growth in the industrial production of livestock and processed meat industry is driving the demand for feed prebiotics in the region. Increasing consumer awareness and occurrence of livestock diseases have led the way for feed prebiotics market growth. While the Asia-Pacific region possesses the highest scope of growth globally, unclear regulatory structure and concern over raw material availability act as obstacle for the market growth.

The most common forms of prebiotics are non-digestible oligosaccharides (NDO), including inulin, oligofructose mannanoligosaccharides, gluco-oligosaccharides, and galacto-oligosaccharides; inulin forms the majority of the market share. By application, the market is explained on the basis of various animal types including- Ruminant, Poultry, Swine, Aquaculture, Pet Food, Horses etc. Poultry and swine are the major consumers of feed prebiotics while aquaculture would grow at a faster CAGR in the region.

Asia-Pacific market is the second largest market for feed prebiotics, globally. Countries like China, India and Thailand are the fastest growing countries in the region. Countries such as Indonesia, Vietnam, and Malaysia are also promising markets in the region. The major reason for growth in these countries is adoption of intensive farming system.

Untapped markets of Asia-Pacific region is the target of many key players. The Asia-Pacific animal feed prebiotics market is fragmented among different global and local players. Cargill Incorporated, Beghin Meiji, Begin Meiji, Abbott Laboratories are the major players and holds a strong hold in the market. Players are focusing extensively on innovation and strong R&D for new product launches to gain a competitive edge in the region.
