Feed software can be of various types depending on the need of the producer or livestock farmer. Software for feed formulation is the most widely used software segment and is defined as a mathematical tool that prepares a nutritionally complete diet of livestock based on several input variables and within certain limits. These limits are set in accordance with the animal's nutritional requirements and the ingredient costs. The common input variables for feed formulation include - Ingredients costs, nutrient content of these ingredients, nutritional requirement of the animal, nutrient availability to the animal and the minimum/maximum limits. Feed formulation requires the use of linear-programming software. Software using animal simulation models are also gaining ground in recent years.

The end-users of this software are the feed mills and manufacturers. They utilize these to gain a scientific and precise understanding of the necessary product. Such techniques help in the optimization of the feed production process. Some of these software can also be used to understand the livestock behavior and in identifying sick animals at a low cost.

The rapidly growing meat demand is one of the prime movers for the adoption of such products. This increasing demand often puts a strain on the available raw materials, thereby increasing their price. One of the key applications of feed formulation software is to mitigate the losses that arise out of such high prices through optimization of the whole production process. The other economic benefit is in using only the absolutely required amount of several feed additives. There are also restrictions in terms of input variables to the software; these are often due to logistics problems associated with raw material storage.

The market is segmented by the type of software used, animals and geography. Feed formulation software is the largest and dominant segment and is expected to grow at a high rate. The other important segment is that of animal simulation models, which have an increasing scope in the industry. In terms of animal type, poultry is the largest segment due to several species-specific conditions. North America and Europe house almost all of the top feed software companies, granting themselves a dominant market share. Some Asian countries, such as India, have shown growing interest in the R&D aspects of feed software development.

The market also throws up several opportunities with regard to development of a fully integrated nutrition model and advanced animal simulation tools.
