The Global aqua production is currently at 165 million tones and is expected to reach 200 million tones by 2020. Fish and Shrimp account for 80% of the global aqua production, in terms of capture, aquaculture, and consumption. The dwindling natural resources, TAC regulations in various regions and other sustainability reasons have reduced the dependence on Captured Fisheries whereas technological breakthroughs have increased the aquaculture industry tremendously.

Fish includes species like Carp, Salmon, Tilapia, Catfish, anchovy and various other species, which are found in regional waters of many producing countries. Shrimp is the highest traded commodity in the industry in terms of monetary value and includes different species of cold and warm water prawns etc. Fish & Shrimp are considered a great source of protein and nutrition and is consumed by humans worldwide for its health benefits. Consumer awareness regarding the health benefits of seafood, changing demographics in the developing world and increasing consumption have all driven the Global fish market and along with it, the markets for feeds and feed additives. A large part of fish production is used for human consumption directly and a small portion is used for feed purposes for manufacturing fishmeal and fish oil. Price volatility of these raw materials and regulatory framework across the world are hindrances to the market.

The global Aqua feed market is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 3.4%, and estimated to reach $30.7 Billion market by 2020. With globally increasing demand for fish and fish-based products, the compound feed demand in the aquatic animal's food industry is also expected to increase at a CAGR of 2.1% in terms of volume for the period of 2014-2020. By 2020, it is expected that more than 50% of the global fish supplies will come from fish farms. Growth is particularly high in emerging countries such as China, India, and Brazil because of increasing income levels and rising demand for seafood.

With limited availability of marine feed resources and rising global demand for fish, the fish-farming trend is expected to increase, driving the market for compound feed. Food safety concerns are promoting fish farming because farmed fish offer a higher level of food security, since the entire life cycle has been rigorously controlled. Seafood is the preferred meat type in Asia-Pacific countries such as China, Indonesia, and Philippines. A variety of fish, prawns, lobsters, and crabs are abundantly available in these countries and form an integral part of the diet.

The Asia-Pacific market, although accounting for a significant share of the overall market, is expected to be relatively unexplored, primarily due to the low level of organization in the fish industry. Unlike developing nations in Asia and Latin America, developed regions of the world (Western Europe and the US) have low population growth rates and have attained high level of urbanization; their demand for aqua feed is limited because of relatively less production but nevertheless have steady demand for live fish and other sea food products.
