Hazardous location motors are devices/equipment used in hazardous areas, where concentrations of flammable gases, vapor and dust are high. Understandably, this environment possesses serious threats as even small sparks or high temperatures surfaces can ignite the hazardous substances and cause an explosion. The explosion-proof motors approved for Class I location contain all the features used in the most critical areas where cleanliness, wash-down tolerance, and safety for hazardous liquids, vapors or dust exist. This not only solves the motion control needs of the application but also operates safely without any scope for a hazardous event.

Rapid industrialization and stricter rules & regulations laid down on the grounds of safety and the emerging economies has provided significant impetus to the hazardous location motors market, which is projected to grow at a CAGR of 5.69% over the forecast period 2016 - 2021. There are different types of motors used in different hazardous locations with different classes and zones. The different zones are zone 0, zone 20, zone 1, zone 21, zone 2 and zone 22, whereas, the classes are divided into class I, class II and class III. The different classes identify the physical characteristics of the hazardous materials present, where the motor will operate. However, due to technological innovation and growing safety measures, all the hazardous location motors should carry T-code designation. The T-codes signify the maximum absolute motor surface temperature that will develop under all conditions of operation, including motor overload and even burnout. This needs to be approved for different classes, zones and divisions, according to their different operation areas.

The motors are designed/constructed in such a way that they are equipped with sufficient provisions to battle adverse conditions like explosions so that they can prevent the release of explosive gases or vapors into the surrounding environment. Such motors are used in hazardous locations and are commonly used in applications like the spray painting and finishing areas, petroleum refining plants, dry cleaning facilities, utility gas plants, grain elevators and grain handling facilities, aluminum manufacturing and storage areas, firework plants and storage areas and others.

Global hazardous location motors market is segmented based on their types, class, division, hazardous zones, applications and geography. On the basis of types, the market has been segmented into explosion-proof general purpose motors, drill rig duty motors, explosion-proof pump motors, explosion-proof inverter duty motors, explosion-proof severe duty motors and others.

Drivers
Technological innovations, growing safety measures and increasing demand for energy efficient motors are some of the major drivers stimulating the growth of this segment.

Challenges

Designing and manufacturing motors that completely experience an internal explosion, without rupturing and erupting it; also, in a way that no hot gases escape from the enclosure, these two phenomena appear to be the major challenges faced by the global hazardous location motors market.

Some of the market players mentioned in the report are Emerson Industrial Automation, Brook Crompton, ABB Group, Bluffton Motors Works, Rockwell Automation and WEG Industries.
