Escherichia coli (E. coli) are rod-shaped gram-negative bacteria that are commonly found in the environment, foods, and intestines of warm-blooded animals. Most of the E.coli strains are usually harmless to humans, but some strains identified to cause serious some medical complications like gastrointestinal tract infections, cholangitis, cholecystitis, bacteremia, neonatal meningitis and pneumonia, urinary tract infection (UTI), and mostly spread via contaminated food or water.

E.coli is also used to test the effectiveness of effluent disinfection in a wastewater treatment plant and check the fecal contamination in humans. Membrane filtration, multiple tube fermentation, enzyme substrate methods and presence/absence (P/A) tests are generally used to test water sample. P/A tests are mostly used due to their cost effectiveness and they do not require skilled laboratory personnel or sophisticated laboratory setup to perform the tests.

Globally with increase in E. coli infections, demand for quick and precision test kits is on the rise. Currently, there is larger market for enzyme immunoassay (EIA) kits. On the other hand, polymerase chain reactions (PCR) based tests are used to test specific drug resistant strain during epidemics.
