With numerous developments taking place in every industry across the globe, there is still one resource, which is sought after most, irrespective of the industry. Power is the most sought after resource, which as of date is not as abundant as it once was many years back. Titans in the industry have been working with developing clean and more importantly renewable energy, which can be harvested and sustained over the long term. Many of the major oil companies have invested in looking at renewable energy as this is expected to form a key source of revenue generation in the later years. With so much investment on power generation, the technology required for the transmission of this power is also under scrutiny. In order to answer this demand, superconducting power lines have been brought in the market for a number of reasons. The key criteria for a superconducting power line is that it is able to transmit higher capacity of power, more than a standard power cable. Further to this, the energy loss in these cables will be as low as 5 % for a distance in the range of 2000 to 3000 miles. The cost for these superconducting power lines will be high in the initial stages, however, the savings in terms of energy saved and the distance, which this power can be transmitted over, will provide higher profits to the company over the long term.

A single superconducting wire with a small cross-section will be able to carry more power than multiple copper wires in a bundle. Thus, savings is also recognized in terms of the weight of the overall cable that will be a lot lesser and hence, lesser support would be required for these lines. Power distribution companies have already been using superconducting power lines for small scale projects and have realized the benefits of this technology. The ROI on this technology will be too high for any organization to ignore. One key drawback to the entire system is that there is already a high legacy base of copper-based superconducting wires that will not be changed any time soon. The cost for replacing these wires with superconducting wires will be high when taking into consideration the volume of copper-based wire that is already in place. Superconducting power lines however will be used or emergency situations where in case there is a natural calamity, it would be more feasible to erect a superconducting wire station which will be able to carry higher power and over large distances than to look at normal copper-based wire systems.
