About Variable Valve Timing System

Variable valve timing (VVT) system is used in marine engines to increase the efficiency of engines to produce more power at lower rates of rotations per minute (rpm) using optimum amounts of fuel. The VVT system in marine engines gives an increase of about 5% in fuel efficiency. VVT controls the timing of the intake valves so that sufficient amount of air is taken in to burn the fuel, enabling complete combustion and higher power output. Currently, VVT systems have more concentration among high-power output engines. High-power output engines in marine boats usually tend to have more power at high rates of rpm. Hence, OEMs have started adding VVT systems to efficiently bring power to low rates of rpm. Japanese OEMs namely Yamaha, Suzuki, and Honda are the main volume players employing VVT systems in their marine engines.

Commenting on the report, an analyst said: “One of latest trends in the market is rise in number of VVT-equipped mid-output power marine engines. USEPA and CARB emission standards followed by the US mandates marine engine OEMs to use technologies like VVT systems and direct injection in their engines to control emissions. The cost of adding direct injection and VVT systems to high-power output engines justifies prices of high-power output engines. VVT systems have a penetration of 14% in the mid-power output marine engines segment of the US as it is not feasible for OEMs to add the transmission system in the mid power range. This will increase the operating cost of the engine in a market that already has a preference for high-power output engines. High-power output marine engines have a VVT systems penetration of 86% in the US.”

According to the report, one of the primary drivers in the market is growth of boating industry. Sales of powerboats in the US has increased about 80% in 2014. Wakeboard/ski boats, personal watercraft, aluminum fishing boats, pontoon boats, and fiberglass runabouts consisted the majority of the powerboat sales in the US. One of the main drivers for the same is the increase in the number of boat shows in the US and the rise in the number of American participants for the same. About 90 million American participants registered for water sports and events in the US in 2013. The boating industry in the US has been positively affected by the recovery of the US economy, stronger job market, and decrease in fuel prices.

Further, the report states that one major challenge in the market is low profitability in low- and mid-power output engines. VVT has the highest penetration of 82% in high-power output engines ranging above 150hp. VVT systems are used by marine engine OEMs for increasing the torque produced by the engine at low rates of rpm. OEMs also use VVTs for limiting emissions from their marine engines and also to improve fuel efficiency. Mid- and low-output engines comprise up to 3 cylinders with a maximum displacement up to 1.60 liters. Low-power output engines, which are highly popular in Europe, have lesser moving parts and are low priced. Europe follows separate emissions regulations for two-stroke and four-stroke marine engines.
