The bone pin market will continue to see moderate growth mainly driven by the growth in units. The ASP is expected to remain largely flat, as the current level is already reflective of the commodity market.

It is due to their simplicity and ease of manufacturing that bone pins are considered commodity products with a low ASP. Furthermore, future trends point towards an increase in generic versions that will cap any significant price increase. Since hospitals can simply purchase off-the-shelf bone pins without going through sales representatives, aggressive pricing is expected to be vital for competing in the bone pin market. Nevertheless, future market growth will coincide with the growth of the plate and screw market as bone pins are often used in conjunction with plates and screws.

In provisional fixation, bone pins are often used in conjunction with plates and screws. Surgeons are also becoming more aware of the benefits and advantages of using bone pins prior to permanent fixation. As a result, future growth of the plate and screw market is expected to drive the market for bone pins.

Bone pins are manufactured in a wide range of diameters suitable for various types of applications. This report will cover bone pins with diameters ranging from 0.6 mm to 3.0 mm (Kirschner wires or K-wires) and from 3 mm to 6 mm (Steinmann pins). In general, these bone pins are used for either provisional fixation or definitive fixation.
For provisional fixation, their applications, taking place mainly during the fracture reduction stage, are followed by definitive fixation provided through plates and screws. Provisional fixation offers several advantages, including secure and firm fixation of plate to bone with minimal damage to periosteum, precision of plate positioning and adjustment prior to definitive fixation, reduced clamp use during screw placement and stabilization of fracture for intraoperative X rays.
